Ex-wife of former Seahawk Earl Thomas charged with defrauding NFL veteran of $2.7M

Retirement has been tough for former Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas. The 35-year-old reportedly lost more than $2.7 million in a fraud scheme orchestrated by his ex-wife, according to multiple reports.

Nina Thomas was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. The report did not specify where the charges were filed.

The scheme reportedly began in 2021, a year after the pair filed for divorce. Court records showed that Nina Thomas and an unidentified accomplice transferred money and property from the seven-time Pro Bowler and transferred the assets to her bank accounts, the report said.

Nina Thomas then used the funds to purchase items like breast implants and a Hermes Birkin handbag, according to TMZ. She was taken into custody on Dec. 16, three days after authorities issued a warrant for her arrest.

This month’s charges followed a similar incident in 2023 when authorities accused a New Orleans man of stealing Earl Thomas’ identity to cash NFL checks and transfer ownership of vehicles in a $1.9 million scheme.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office told Nola.com that the man, identified as Kevin Thompson, was in a romantic relationship with Nina Thomas throughout the scheme.

Earl Thomas racked up seven Pro Bowl appearances and five All-Pro awards during his 10-year NFL career, primarily as a member of the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense.

His career ended after a single season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. The team released him during training camp in 2020 due to “personal conduct that has adversely affected the Baltimore Ravens,” likely referring to an on-field fight with teammate Chuck Clark.
