Transgender mice: Trump slams bizarre government spending

President Trump brought his budget-cutting fight directly to the country Tuesday night in his address to Congress, ticking off some of the strangest spending items that taxpayers are funding.

He mocked some $8 million he said is being spent on experiments “for making mice transgender” and $60 million spent on “Afro-Colombian empowerment in Central America.”

He questioned spending for “LGBTQI+” in the African nation of Lesotho.

“Which nobody has ever heard of,” the president added.

And he marveled at $40 million spent on “sedentary migrants.”

“Nobody knows what that is,” he said.

Mr. Trump spent seven minutes of his address on the spending and his Department of Government Efficiency, which has drawn attention to the spending.

The president twice hailed Elon Musk, his close adviser on government efficiency, who was in the public gallery for the speech.

“Thank you Elon, he’s working very hard,” Mr. Trump said, before pointing to the Democratic side of the chamber. “Everybody here, even this side, appreciates it, I believe. They just don’t want to admit that.”
