Sen. Warren offers Musk $2 trillion savings blueprint for DOGE
Sen. Elizabeth Warren sent Elon Musk a liberal wishlist of possible spending cuts and tax increases on the wealthy, which she says would let the Department of Government Efficiency identify trillions of dollars in taxpayer savings over the next decade.
For his part, Mr. Musk, who is leading the DOGE commission, has been focused on weeding out waste and fraudulent payments in entitlement programs. He also has shined a bright social media light on some of the questionable spending of taxpayer dollars — including on empty federal buildings and money spent on illegal immigrants.
Ms. Warren, in a recent letter to Mr. Musk and an op-ed Tuesday, shared 30 recommendations that she says would help him develop a road map for getting the nation’s finances in order and let him stick to his initial “bombastic” goal of cutting $2 trillion in federal spending, of which he has since backed off.
“My recommendations would reduce spending on wasteful programs and contracts, would cut out unfair loopholes and giveaways to the wealthiest Americans, would make the government more efficient and effective, and would save taxpayers at least $2 trillion over the next decade — allowing DOGE to meet its goal while avoiding dangerous cuts to important federal programs,” the Massachusetts Democrat said.
Her wish list includes cutting “wasteful spending at the Department of Defense,” expanding the Medicare price negotiations program and curbing “taxpayer abuse” in the Medicare Advantage program.
Instead of eliminating the Education Department, Ms. Warren wants to “eliminate or reduce” funding for the federal charter school program and strip funding toward for-profit colleges. She also wants to increase the estate tax on the “wealthiest Americans,” force “some of the richest people in the world” to pay more in capital gains taxes and fully fund the Internal Revenue Service so it can “catch wealthy tax cheats.”
Plus, she hopes to close the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
“If you are serious about finding ways to make the federal government more efficient and save money for American taxpayers — without cutting key programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security or raising taxes on middle-class families — there are ample opportunities for you to do so,” Ms. Warren said.
