Democratic nominee Kamala Harris—who has vowed to be a “candidate of change” and chart a “new way forward”—is considering retaining some of President Joe Biden’s cabinet if her party loses control of the Senate in November, NBC reported.

Concerned about the prospects of Republicans flipping the Senate in November, Harris’s team is considering retaining some current cabinet members if she is elected. They anticipate challenges in appointing new senior officials in a Republican-led confirmation process, according to four sources who spoke to NBC.

Since replacing her boss at the top of the ticket, Vice President Harris has worked to distance herself and her campaign from the failures of the Biden administration—as 65 percent of voters believe the country is headed in the wrong direction—and present herself as the “candidate of change.”

Retaining Biden’s cabinet members could undermine that effort. Harris already faces criticism for lifting multiple sections of her website’s policy page directly from Biden’s platform, the New Republic reported.

A September New York Times/Siena poll found that more than double the number of voters surveyed viewed former president Donald Trump as representing a major change over Harris, 53 percent to 25 percent. Fifty-five percent of respondents said Harris “represents more of the same” compared to Trump’s 34 percent.
